Challenge to FAs and Sponsors to lead reform

Football Associations who voted against Sepp Blatter in last month’s FIFA Presidential election have been urged to push for “genuine reform” of FIFA, and not merely accept that FIFA can suddenly reform itself in the space of six months when it has been unable to do so in the past four or more years. In a letter to the associations that are known to have voted against Mr Blatter, #NewFIFANow co-founder Damian Collins MP has written that the arrests of FIFA officials prior to the Presidential election show that there can be no doubt about the need for change. #NewFIFANow has been advocating since January for a time-limited independent FIFA Reform Commission led by an eminent person to lead FIFA reform. The campaign group confirms that an ’eminent person’ is an individual of the calibre and international standing of former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan. In the letter, #NewFIFANow challenges the football associations to join with #NewFIFANow in “building a truly powerful coalition of interests to achieve the type of world governing body the world deserves.” Together with the International Trade Union Confederation, Playfair Qatar and SKINS – the first Official Non-Sponsor of FIFA, #NewFIFANow last month also urged FIFA’s sponsors to advocate for independent reform also. The role of an independent reform commission would be to conduct a comprehensive review of the management and governance of FIFA including its Constitution, Statutes, financial policies, committee structure, electoral processes and appointments; implement new governance arrangements; and, once implemented, oversee new elections under the revised governance arrangements. The pro-reform football associations were advised that “#NewFIFANow has a transformative vision of FIFA as a principled, trusted and credible organisation; the type of organisation the world wants to see running the world’s biggest and best sport.” ENDS A copy of the letter is available in the right hand column. |
