'Be on the right side of history' FIFA Executive urged
19 July 2015
On the eve of the first FIFA Executive Committee meeting since FIFA President, Sepp Blatter, set aside his mandate, campaign group #NewFIFANow has written to all Executive Committee members inviting them to be on the “right side of history”.
The email begins by saying “we hope you love the game more than you love your position in it” and invites Executive Committee members at tomorrow’s meeting to seek independent reform of FIFA governance led by an eminent person.
“The crisis in which FIFA finds itself has been a long time coming. It has an inevitable end. It is not going to get better.
“As an Executive Committee member, we suggest you have two choices,” the email states.
“You can go down with what is a sinking ship – to use President Sepp Blatter’s favoured boating analogy. Or you can decide that enough is enough and make a stand.”
#NewFIFANow has been advocating since January for time-limited independent governance reform of FIFA led by an eminent person to review, develop and implement all aspects of FIFA’s operations including its electoral system, and to conduct fresh elections.
This same approach was last week formally requested of FIFA by its longest-standing partner, The Coca-Cola Company and was also endorsed by the European Parliament as well as Transparency International, Avaaz and the International Trade Union Confederation.
The Executive Committee members are reminded that they are custodians, not owners, of the sport and they are in an unique position to take a stand.
“We ask you to do the honourable thing and make [independent FIFA reform] happen tomorrow,” the email states.
It concludes by quoting FIFA’s slogan of ‘For the game, for the world’ together with “And for your place in history.”
